About Animals & Friends

Animals & Friends are known for such unmistakable hits as I’m Crying, It’s My Life, We Gotta Get Out Of This Place, Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood and, of course, their signature song The House Of The Rising Sun. Their psychedelic rock is instantly recognisable and has made their indelible mark on pop and rock history.

The audacious band currently includes John Steel and Mick Gallagher (The Blockheads) plus Danny Handley (Spencer Davis, Bobby Elliot) and also Scott Whitley.

The Animals earned their name thanks to their wild stage act. That was 50 years ago and they have calmed down since, but their music has lost none of its vigour.” - Wales Online

The Animals originally hailed from Newcastle before moving down to London to immerse themselves in the swinging pop scene flourishing in the capital. Legend has it that their name came from their wild live shows that saw them play fiery versions of rhythm and blues songs.

Following the move, the band released their transatlantic smash hit single The House Of The Rising Sun in the summer of 1964. The song hit #1 in America, Canada and the UK. The song has been hailed by Rolling Stone magazine as forever shifting the course of popular music and listed in their 500 Greatest Songs Of All Time.
