About Corinne Bailey Rae
Grammy Award winning neo soul singer Corinne Bailey Rae has already thrilled the world with her amazing voice as featured on her eponymously titled debut album and her record The Sea which, together, have sold over five million copies. Now she returns to the stage with new material to promote her latest album The Heart Speaks In Whispers.
Corinne Jacqueline Baily was born and raised in Leeds, Yorkshire, where she benefitted from classical violin lessons before being drawn to singing. Influenced by the rock side of riot grrl, she started the indie band Helen after becoming enamoured by the overtly female yet rocking image. The band enjoyed some success before ending, and Bailey began to embark in the direction of soul.
In 2004 she got her breakthrough moment when signing to Global Talent Publishing and collaborated with The stiX on his track Young And Foolish. The track propelled her into popular consciousness. She soon released her own debut single Like A Star at the end of the following year accompanied by her self-titled debut album Corinne Bailey Rae at the beginning of 2006.
The album was well received all around the world and sold 1.9 million copies in the US alone. Her achievements were recognised at the 2007 Grammy Awards where she was nominated for Record Of The Year and Best New Artist and Song Of The Year.
Collaborating with jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, the pair won Album Of The Year and Best Contemporary Jazz Album at the 2008 Grammys for their album River: The Joni Letters.
Her second album was released in 2010 and titled The Sea. It shot straight in at #5 in the UK charts, hit #7 on the Billboard 200 in America and continued to sell well across the globe. The album was once again a hit for Baily with the critics and was notably crowned as the year’s best album by Caroline Sullivan in The Guardian.
Her latest release is her third studio album The Heart Speaks In Whispers. Already a commercial success, the album sold 14,000 copies in the States during the first week of release and hit #14 in the UK Album Chart.
