Fantastic ensemble playing
I first heard Laura Jurd and Dinosaur play a live 40 minute set recorded for Radio 3 a few months ago, was knocked out with what I heard, bought their album and was eager to see them play live at The Camden Assembly. They completely surpassed my expectations. Theirs is small group ensemble jazz playing of the highest order, clearly matching some of their influences (Miles Davis from 'In A Silent Way' to 'Bitches Brew') but taking them to the next level.
Their is no vamping whilst a band member takes a solo, they are all listening to each other closely after the trumpet/synth has stated a theme and they all push each other - as an ensemble - to take the music forward. It would be invidious to pick out one of the four musicians: this was group playing of tremendous innovation and deep groove. Wonderful - had a smile on my face the whole time - and the venue was good too.
