Born Marcus Jamal Hopson in 1985, Los Angeles. Hopson showed a real prowess for rapping since his teenage years. He began working on his debut project Emurge in 2002 which proved to be an underground smash. Original copies are rare and highly sought and bootlegs regularly trade hands.

Emurge saw a massive rise in Hopson’s profile and in 2007 he signed with Ruthless. Although his arrival at the label was widely publicised, the 2009 release of his debut album; Gazing At The Moonlight was not. This resulted in a press battle with label owner Tomica Wright, with Hopson claiming he had not sanctioned the album’s release and had not received the promised financial and promotional support.

Leaving Ruthless behind, he released the single Sag My Pants in 2010. The accompanying video went viral after being shared by his ever growing fans online. He also released his RAW Mixtape in the same year which included the song Sag My Pants plus tracks severely dissing Ruthless. Having established himself through his own self-promotion, Hopson adopted his signature look of wearing white contact lenses.

In 2012 the announcement was made that would work with Tech N9ne on Hopsin’s next album. Knock Madness was released in 2013 and held a more positive message than his previous work.
His rise continued with the 2015 album Pound Syndrome. Featuring the talents of Jarren Benton and Dizzy Wright, the album shot into #17 in the Billboard 200.
