New York trio blending synth-pop and post-punk into emotionally rich, atmospheric alternative music.
Nation of Language are a New York-based trio crafting a distinctive sound that blends synth-pop, post-punk and minimal wave into something both nostalgic and forward-thinking. Led by Ian Richard Devaney, the band has built a reputation for transforming synthesiser-driven music into something deeply emotional, pairing shimmering electronics with introspective, human storytelling.
Their acclaimed albums, including Introduction, Presence (2020), A Way Forward (2021) and Strange Disciple (2023), have earned widespread praise, with the latter recognised as Rough Trade’s Album of the Year. Across their work, Nation of Language explore themes of love, loss and connection, balancing melancholic textures with anthemic melodies. Known for their immersive live performances and richly atmospheric sound, they continue to stand out as one of the most compelling voices in modern alternative music.
