A LITTLE BIT ABOUT THE SONGS

 

"Alone" - The Cure 

"Alone" is a song by English rock band The Cure, released on 26 September 2024 as the lead single from their album Songs of a Lost World. This marked the band’s first new studio material in 16 years, following 2008’s 4:13 Dream.

The album, teased since 2019, saw its release delayed by several years. Its title was revealed in 2022, coinciding with a tour where "Alone" debuted live. Frontman Robert Smith described the song as pivotal, saying, “It’s the track that unlocked the record.” Once recorded, it set the tone and focus for the entire album.

 

"Last Word" - Baroness

"Last Word" is the lead single from Baroness' 2023 album Stone. Known for their blend of heavy metal and progressive rock, the track features intense, fuzz-driven riffs and dynamic vocals from John Baizley. It explores themes of death and rebirth, with lyrics that resonate deeply with the album's broader existential themes.

The single showcases Baroness' ability to balance accessibility with their complex musicality, continuing their tradition of creative risk-taking. Stone marks an evolution in the band's sound, incorporating elements from folk to metal, and has been praised for its genre-bending approach.

"Nixon 2" - Crop Top 

"Nixon 2" by Crop Top is a fast-paced, energetic track typical of their style, featuring raw, punk-influenced sound. The song continues the band's exploration of bold, gritty themes with a blend of catchy hooks and a rebellious attitude.

This release is part of their 2024 work with Diet Beer Records, contributing to their growing reputation in the alternative music scene. It showcases the band's evolution while maintaining their signature raw energy.

 

"ROCKMAN" - Mk.gee

Michael Todd Gordon, known as Mk.gee, is an American singer-songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist who debuted in 2017 with the single "I Know How You Get." In October 2024, he released the hit single “ROCKMAN,” a track infused with 80s rock influences.

The song blends playful, eclectic instrumentals with echoey vocals, showcasing Mk.gee’s unique style. By November 2024, “ROCKMAN” had garnered nearly 3 million streams on Spotify, further establishing Mk.gee as a rising star in the modern music scene.

 

"From the Stars" - Crug

"From the Stars" is a track by Crug, released on 24 May 2023. The song blends hip-hop and rap with celestial, introspective themes, conveying a cosmic and emotional journey. With reflective lyrics, it delves into the ideas of self-discovery and the vastness of existence.

The track's production pairs atmospheric beats with a rhythmic flow, making it stand out as a thought-provoking piece in Crug’s growing discography. It reflects the band's evolving sound and thematic exploration.

 

"Having a Blast" - Green Day

"Having a Blast" is a track from Green Day’s landmark 1994 album Dookie. The song is a fast-paced, punk rock anthem that tackles themes of frustration and rebellion. The lyrics reflect a sense of defiance and anger, with a dark humour that was a hallmark of the band's early work. As part of Dookie, the song contributed to Green Day’s rise in the punk scene and remains a classic example of their energetic, raw sound from that era.

"labour" - Paris Paloma 

"labour" by Paris Paloma, released in 2023, is an emotional folk-pop anthem about the frustrations and anger women face regarding societal expectations and the emotional labour they bear in relationships. With powerful lyrics like "It's not an act of love if you make her / You make me do too much labour," the song highlights the unfair burdens placed on women.

Quickly gaining viral success, particularly on platforms like TikTok, it became a vehicle for discussing misogyny and domestic expectations. The track sparked important conversations on gender equality, resonating widely and becoming an anthem for those seeking to challenge these roles. A fan-fueled version of the song, which incorporates vocals from over 400 fans, was released in March 2024 to celebrate its anniversary. 

 

"Fool for Love" - Gotts Street Park, Pip Millett

"Fool for Love" by Gotts Street Park, featuring Pip Millett, is a track from their debut album On The Inside, which was released on 13 October 2023. The song stands out with its lush, sun-soaked melodies and the smooth, confident vocal delivery of Millett.

The track showcases Gotts Street Park’s signature blend of vintage soul and alternative R&B, enhanced by the duelling electric pianos that complement Millett's raw, passionate performance. "Fool for Love" is a prime example of the band's ability to merge intricate musicianship with evocative emotion, solidifying their reputation in the modern R&B scene.

 

"Summer Of Hate" - Do Nothing

Nottingham quartet Do Nothing have followed up their 2023 debut album Snake Sideways with the release of their new single "Summer of Hate," marking the start of their next chapter. The track highlights frontman Chris Bailey’s distinctive vocals and surrealist lyricism, shifting from the angst of their debut to a more upbeat yet introspective theme.

Despite its summery title, the song reflects on childhood bullies and the lingering effects of rejection. Recorded at Notts' JT Soar with Folly Group’s Louis Milburn, Chris describes it as "a fun song for the summer" made in a relaxed, sunny atmosphere with friends.

 

"Love In a Car" - The House of Love

"Love in a Car" by The House of Love is a track from their self-titled debut album, released in 1988. The song reflects themes of intimacy, longing, and escape, with the car acting as a metaphor for an intimate space where the characters explore their emotions.

The lyrics capture a relationship between nostalgia and the thrill of new experiences, making the car a symbol of freedom and connection. It remains one of the standout songs on the album for its evocative imagery and emotional depth.

"Number One" - FEET 

FEET released their new single, "Number One", earlier this month, offering a standout B-side from their 2024 album, Make It Up. The track has quickly become a fan favourite at live shows, marking the first step in the band’s journey toward their highly anticipated third album.

Lead vocalist George Haverson describes the song as the start of an expansive musical journey. Recorded with producer Andy Savours during the Make It Up sessions, Number One showcases the band’s evolving sound and cements their growing reputation as one of the most exciting acts in the genre-warping post-punk/indie scene.

 

"Carmensita" - Devendra Banhart 

"Carmensita" by Devendra Banhart, released in 2007 as part of his album Smokey Rolls Down Thunder Canyon, is a quirky, upbeat track that blends psychedelic rock with whimsical storytelling. The song tells the story of Carmen, a free-spirited woman who captivates Banhart’s heart, with a mix of playful lyrics, exotic percussion, and dreamy instrumentation.

Its lighthearted melody and Banhart's distinctive, off-kilter vocals give the song a fun, surreal vibe. Known for its blend of acoustic and electronic elements, "Carmensita" reflects Banhart’s unique style and ability to fuse diverse musical influences.

 

"Primo Victoria" - Sabaton

"Primo Victoria" is the title track from Sabaton's 2005 album, Primo Victoria. The song draws inspiration from the Allied invasion of Normandy during World War II, specifically the D-Day landings of June 6, 1944.

The phrase "Primo Victoria" translates to "First Victory" and symbolizes the courage and sacrifice of soldiers during this historic battle. The song marked a pivotal moment in the band's career, helping define their distinctive blend of heavy metal and history-themed storytelling. Known for its rousing chorus and impactful lyrics, it has become a hallmark of Sabaton's energetic sound.

"Memories" - The Mystery Lights

"Memories" by The Mystery Lights is a track from their album Purgatory, released in September 2024. The song captures the band’s signature blend of garage rock, psychedelia, and punk, delivering an energetic burst of raw emotion.

It contributes to the album's eclectic mix, combining 60s rock influences with art punk and garage sensibilities. Known for their high-energy sound, The Mystery Lights continue to create catchy and dynamic tracks that highlight their growing musicianship and emotional depth.

 

"Life Goes On" - The Sundays

Life Goes On from The Sundays’ 1997 album Cry is a gentle yet poignant track that explores themes of resilience and the ongoing flow of life. Harriet Wheeler’s emotive vocals, combined with the band’s signature dreamy, guitar-driven sound, create a reflective atmosphere.

The song captures a sense of melancholy, but also hope, making it a timeless piece in The Sundays' catalogue. Life Goes On stands as a beautiful reminder of life's continuity, resonating with listeners through its sincerity and emotive depth.

 

"Waxwing" - Sorry

Sorry's latest single "Waxwing" introduces a slow-burning, electro-infused sound that showcases a darker side to their music. Released ahead of their upcoming tour with Fontaines D.C., the track features slinking drums and the sultry vocals of Asha Lorenz.

The song's eerie atmosphere is punctuated by an interpolation of Toni Basil’s iconic "Hey Mickey," with Lorenz playfully questioning the nature of "Mickey" through a series of cryptic lyrics. The accompanying video, directed by FLASHA, is equally haunting, adding to the song's unsettling vibe.

"Waxwing" marks an exciting return for the London-based band after their 2022 album Anywhere But Here.

"Dig" - Orlando Weeks, Rhian Teasdale

Orlando Weeks, of The Maccabees, released his third solo album, LOJA, in August 2024, following its lead single, "Dig", featuring Rhian Teasdale of Wet Leg, in April. Weeks describes Dig as “three minutes of half-argument, long worn-out promises being remade, and road-weary offences being retaken,” blending introspective songwriting with Teasdale’s evocative vocals.

Inspired by Weeks’ move to Lisbon, LOJA explores themes of optimism and reflection, serving as a love letter to his new home. Produced by Sergio Maschetzko, the album was recorded in just 13 days and celebrated with a gallery residency in London.

 

"Crown" - Billie Marten 

Billie Marten's single Crown, released in October 2024, marks her return after the success of her 2023 album Drop Cherries. The track, recorded in Brooklyn with producer Philip Weinrobe, captures a moment of introspection and vulnerability. Marten wrote Crown while reflecting in her garden, inspired by the quiet peace of watching her cat.

The song features a live recording with minimal overdubs, preserving an intimate, raw feel. Marten describes it as a song of longing and self-acceptance, encapsulating a truthful moment of personal reflection
