Formed in 1992, Ash first began as a punk rock three piece based in Downpatrick, including singer and guitarist Tim Wheeler, bassist Mark Hamilton and drummer Rick McMurray. The teenage trio quickly made a name for themselves with their youthful energy and wild onstage antics, with their debut EP Trailer championed by John Peel.

Their music would quickly evolve to embrace an anthemic indie feel, as heard on their first full-length record 1977 named in tribute to when the movie Star Wars was released (an obsession for the band). It was also the year Wheeler and Hamilton were born. The platinum-selling LP would top the charts upon release in 1996, continuing such smash-hit singles as “Girl From Mars”, “Goldfinger” and “Oh Yeah”. The band would go on to headline Glastonbury at the Pyramid Stage the following year.

Ash would recruit guitarist Charlotte Hatherly before releasing the second album Nu-Clear Sounds in 1998 which would see them explore a gritter garage rock sound. In 2001, they launched their third record Free All Angels which chimed with the rise of pop-punk, once again hitting No. 1 and reached platinum sales thanks to the blistering single “Burn Baby Burn” and “Shining Light” – the heartbreaking song that would earn Wheeler an Ivor Novello Award.

Following the release of their 2004 hard rock record Meltdown, Hatherly left the group to pursue her solo career. A three-piece once again, Ash brought out the emo-tinged album Twilight of the Innocents and embarked on the ambitious A – Z project which saw them release 26 singles in a year. They have released a further three LPs, including Kablammo! (2015), Islands (2018) and their latest title Race The Night which dropped in 2023.

Now, Ash join in the Independent Venue Week celebrations by returning home to play at the Oh Yeah Centre. Look forward to hearing a set spanning the entirety of the bands incredible career, sure to delight their many fans and all music lovers.

Ash are also poised to release Race The Night Extended. This deluxe edition of their latest album includes acoustic versions, extended songs, a remix track plus a cover. Race The Night Extended is out on Wednesday 14th February 2024. CLICK HERE to pre-order.
