About PIXIES

The importance of the Pixies cannot be understated. With their signature sound of quiet verses loud choruses that combined massively overdriven guitars and crazed vocals they set the template for guitar music in the Nineties. Their insane songs blend surrealism and stream of consciousness ramblings with a style that is somewhere between garage rock, surf and Spanish guitar. Unmistakable and highly influential, you cannot claim to have been to a gig till you have seen Pixies.

Their line up currently includes drummer David Lovering, lead guitar from Joey Santiago, vocals from the enigmatic Frank Black (AKA Charles Thompson IV) who also plays guitar with recent addition Paz Lenchantin playing bass.

PIXIES now announce headline dates in support of new album Doggerel. See them at:

* Forum Birmingham, Birmingham
* Cardiff International Arena, Cardiff
* Roundhouse, London

The early beginnings of the band first started when Santiago and Francis shared a suite whilst at college before Francis embarked on a six-month student exchange trip to Spain. The pair had been jamming together which continued upon Francis’ return and which led to the band being formed in January 1986. They were joined by bassist Kim Deal after she spotted an ad they have taken out and were nearly joined by her twin sister Kelley on drums, however they would enlist Lovering instead. Kim would later join her sibling in their band The Breeders.

Gigging heavily, the band were spotted by Producer Gary Smith of the infamous Fort Apache Studios told the band he “could not sleep until you guys are world famous ”. They produced a 17 track demo known as The Purple Tape which saw them sign to essential indie label 4AD.

Pixies have produced some of the most important records in alternative rock history. From the debut Surfa Rosa to the follow up Doolittle, the science fiction fuelled record Bossanova and the insanely heavy Troupe Le Monde.

However, there was turbulence in the band behind the scenes with the relationship between Francis and Deal becoming ever more difficult and tumultuous. Pixies broke up in 1993 following a radio announcement by Francis made before consulting with the other members.

They were to reunite for a series of gigs in 2003 followed scattered live appearances over the next ten years. However, Deal would leave in 2013, just prior the recording of comeback album Indie Cindy. Their illustrious career would continue with records Head Carrier and Beneath The Eyrie.

Now Pixies return with another stellar record; Doggerel.
