Belle and Sebastian are a Scottish indie pop band formed in Glasgow in 1996. Led by singer-songwriter Stuart Murdoch, the group are celebrated for their intricate, literate songwriting and their gentle, melodic sound that fuses folk-pop warmth with orchestral grace. Their music often features lush arrangements of strings, brass and woodwinds, alongside wistful vocals and bittersweet humour.
Their debut albums Tigermilk and If You’re Feeling Sinister established Belle and Sebastian as cult favourites, praised for their storytelling and emotional intelligence. Follow-up releases such as The Boy with the Arab Strap and Dear Catastrophe Waitress expanded their sonic palette while maintaining their trademark intimacy. Drawing comparisons to artists like Nick Drake, The Velvet Underground and The Smiths, the band’s influence can be felt across a generation of indie and alternative musicians. Decades on, Belle and Sebastian remain a cornerstone of British indie music — literate, tender and quietly defiant in their charm.
